      Hi! Well, our ribosomes are important for making all of the proteins in our cell, so without them, our cells cannot grow and reproduce, so this usually results in cell death.

      One such example would be a disease called Diamond Blackfan Anaemia. This is a rare blood disorder (so chances are, you’ve never heard of it!). Blood cells are really sensitive to ribosome problems as they require a lot of ribosomes when they develop. Think about how much blood you have in your body and it needs renewing from your bone marrow cells often. So, in these people, they can’t produce blood as quickly because they can’t produce as many ribosomes or their ribosomes don’t work as well- it’s like running a machine with some parts missing- it might work but it isn’t as efficient and doesn’t go as quickly! The patients often need a lot of blood transfusions or bone marrow transplants to help them produce enough blood cells.
